I can't remember the last time I watched a movie in the cinemas but last week I went to the special advance screening of The Dry starring Eric Bana.

This movie is based from the novel of the same title by Jane Harper. I haven't read the book and I didn't have any idea what the story was about so I was quite surprised to find out it is a crime, drama, thriller movie. Eric Bana's character is Federal Agent Aaron Falk who returns to his home town Kiewarra after 20 years due to the gruesome death of his childhood friend Luke and his family. The people think Luke killed his family but Aaron, with some emotional pressure from Luke's parents decided to stay and help with the investigation.

Besides the tragedy that made Aaron return home, we also find out something that has haunted him for years. We learn that 20 years ago, a 17 year old Ellie was found dead and he was suspected to be the reason why.

This town may be small but it is full of big secrets and it slowly unravels throughout the film. I almost played detective watching the movie and I thought I knew who the killer was but there are some sick twists and turns that will leave you shocked, enraged and emotional.

With regards to the title, the dry refers to the drought the town has been suffering from for years. The flashbacks between the two decades really accentuated the dry spell and the damage it has brought upon the town and its people.

Overall, this movie was beautifully shot, captivating and has an intense story that will keep you on your toes. It's not usually a movie I'd pick to watch but I thoroughly enjoyed watching it. I was intrigued the whole time and felt like I was a detective solving the case. This mysterious, captivating, and intense film is one to watch.

The Dry opens in New Zealand cinemas on 1 January 2021.
